The temple of Baal-Shamin in Palmyra, Syria

ISIS Bombs Ancient Temple Baal Shamin: ISIS has exploded the temple of Baal Shamin in Palmyra, as part of its most recent wrecking of the historic city. “Daesh placed a large quantity of explosives in the temple of Baal Shamin today and then blew it up causing much damage to the temple,” Syria’s antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told AFP on Sunday, using another name for ISIS. (The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the militant group blew up the 2,000-year-old structure about a month ago.) More recently, images of ISIS bulldozing the Catholic monastery of Mar Elian near Qaryatain in Syria made rounds on the Internet. Inside the 1,500-year-old church would have been some of the oldest Christian paintings in the country, dating to the 6th century. This all follows ISIS’s beheading an antiquities scholar in the Syrian city of Palmyra last week.
